How to prepare for skin resurfacing, and how to look after your skin for the week afterwards.
Before your appointment
- Stay well hydrated and keep skin moisturized leading up to your appointment. Skin should not be irritated or peeling.
- Discontinue any usage of alpha-hydroxy acids and salicylic acid at least 5 days prior.
- Discontinue any of these topicals at least 14 days prior to your appointment: benzoyl peroxide, Retinal, Retin-A, tretinoin, vitamin A, NSAIDS, vitamin C, glycolic acid.
- Remove any and all makeup, skincare products, or SPF before your appointment.
Tell your provider if you
Either of these changes how we treat you, so say so before we start rather than after.
- Are currently pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Have a history of cold sores.
Next 48 hours
- Expect mild redness, warmth and slight swelling.
- Sleep upright, or with your head positioned slightly elevated.
- Apply cool compression to provide comfort.
- Keep skin clean, and avoid touching and picking treated areas.
- Avoid makeup, heavy exercise and extreme heat.
- Use gentle, fragrance free skincare products.
Next 7 days
- Skin may feel and appear dry and flaky as it is healing.
- Do not pick at any micro crusts that will appear on the 2nd and 3rd day.
- Avoid direct sun and UV exposure. Always wear broad spectrum SPF 30+ and reapply every 2 hours.
